James Dyson Award (JDA)
posted on 1 Jun 2020James Dyson Foundation Southeast Asian is inviting you to apply for JDA. Since 2005, the JDA has challenged inventive undergraduates/postgraduates and recent graduates (in the last 4 years) of engineering and design, to invent something that solves a problem. One in five past winners, who each received the £30,000 prize money, have gone on to successfully commercialise their inventions.
Here at JDF and Dyson, we are always looking for inventors who are solving big problems, and this year there will be two winners – not one. In addition to the International winner, in 2020 the JDA will crown a second winner, focused on Sustainability for the first time
Solving real problems
The best inventions are often the simplest, providing clear and intelligent solutions to real-world problems. Past winners have addressed issues such as plastic waste, energy generation and medical treatment in developing countries. The 2019 International winner, MarinaTex, is a home-compostable bioplastic made from a combination of waste material from the fishing industry and sustainable algae. It is designed to be an alternative to single-use plastic films.
Entry criteria:
- Design Brief: design something that solves problem
- Open to university level students (and recent graduates in the last four years) studying product design, industrial design, and engineering
- Submissions can come from an individual or a group
- We are looking for products that have a significant and practical purpose, are commercially viable and are designed with sustainability in mind
- The best entries will include sketches, images of models, prototypes and demonstrate the iterative design process
- NO submission of prototype and project presentation required. All participants including winners will be entitled to keep their respective product copyright and intellectual property
Candidates can find out more details about JDA at our Facebook page and can apply here should they meet the above criteria. The competition is open for entries until 16 July 2020.
